Biography
Grant Lawson covers crime, the courts, policing, and the justice system for Fine Times Canada. He files from courthouses across the country, tracks sentencing trends, and writes about the human cost of Canada's criminal justice system. He handles sensitive material with care and has earned the trust of sources on both sides of the courtroom.
Grant spent six years at the Calgary Herald on the crime and courts beat, covering major trials including several high-profile homicide cases and a police misconduct investigation that led to disciplinary action. Before Calgary, he worked as a general reporter at the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. His Herald investigation into bail delays in Alberta was cited in a provincial justice review.
Grant grew up in Red Deer, Alberta, the oldest of four kids in a family that ran a hardware store. He studied criminology at the University of Alberta and completed his journalism education at the University of Regina. He speaks English, coaches youth baseball in the summer, and is working through a goal of visiting every national historic site in Alberta.
