For Canadians weighing custody options. Exchange custody (Newton, Bitbuy, Coinbase Canada): easier, regulated, slower withdrawals to operators. Self-custody (hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger): faster sends to operators, but you carry the security risk.

For someone who deposits $200-500/month, exchange custody is fine. For someone moving $2,000+/month, self-custody saves enough fees to be worth the security learning curve.

The CRA reporting on crypto is the same regardless of custody (you owe gains/losses on each transaction). Self-custody doesn't get you out of reporting.

For the self-custody route specifically Cloudbet and Wild.io both accept direct wallet deposits without forcing you through an exchange intermediary — that's the workflow I default to now.
